Barcelona Pre-Conference Session

Working Session on Gender & HIV/AIDS Issues and Programmatic Recommendations for USAID and the USAID CA Community

Barcelona Pre-Conference Session, Saturday, July 6, 2002

Over 30 participants attended the all-day USAID/Bureau for Global Health's Interagency Gender Working Group's (IGWG) Working Session on Gender and HIV/AIDS Issues and Programmatic Recommendations for USAID and the USAID CA Community. Participants included staff from field missions, USAID Washington, and 15 CAs and NGOs, and represented programs from all regions.

The working session marked the culmination of a nine-month assessment of the USAID community's work on gender and family planning/HIV/AIDS — and the launch of a participatory analysis process. Specifically, the participants built on the preliminary findings presented; they prioritized the relevant gender issues by their region or country and specified the resources and support needed from USAID in order to effectively address them.

Specific objectives of the Working Session included the following:

By the end of the working session, participants were able to identify the key gender issues in HIV/AIDS and to identify activities and examples to address gender in HIV/AIDS programs.

By the end of the work session, the Gender and HIV/AIDS Task Force gained input on key regional issues to supplement the survey data and recommendations from the field about key activities and supports needed to address regional priority issues.
