(March 2004) The Middle East and North Africa region (MENA) has made significant strides over the past few decades in improving the health, education, and standard of living of its people. But countries in the region face a number of challenges to development, including wide social and economic gaps between rich and poor, rapid population growth, high youth unemployment, and persistent gender discrimination.
