IGWG Gender-Based Violence Task Force Presents

Using Technology to Combat GBV – New Innovations, New Opportunities

When: Thursday, June 29, 2017, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m.
Where: PRB, 1875 Connecticut Ave., NW, Suite 520 Washington, DC  (closest Metro exit is red line Dupont Circle North)

You won’t want to miss this cutting-edge look at innovative technologies to prevent and respond to gender-based violence. In 2014, the GBV Task Force sponsored a standing room-only panel to look at new apps and smartphone technologies to address GBV. Now three years later, new technologies have evolved and are changing sexual and reproductive health realities on the ground from Botswana to the DRC to India.

8:30 – 9:00 am: Meet and greet, light breakfast provided
9:00 – 11:30 am: Presentations and discussion with the following panelists:

  • ElsaMarie D’Silva, founder & CEO of Red Dot Foundation (Safecity)–the largest crowdmap on GBV in India, Kenya, Cameroon and Nepal.
    • “Use of Crowdsourced Data to Address GBV in Public Spaces—Capturing Stories and Advancing Policies.”
  • Ranit Mishori, physician and professor of family medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine, where she leads the department’s Global Health Initiatives
    • “A Mobile App to Document Sexual Violence in Conflict Zones: From the Exam Room to the Court Room and the Bumpy Road in Between.”
  • Jennifer Curran, M&E technical specialist at MEASURE Evaluation.
    • “How Sustainable Is Too Sustainable: Lessons from a Year of Implementing a Mobile-based GBV Referral System”

Space is limited. Please RSVP by Thursday, June 22 to nlagrone@prb.org

Webinar “Drug Shops and Pharmacies: Sources for Family Planning Commodities and Information”

When: July 12, 2017, 9-10:00 am EST
Hosted by: Family Planning High Impact Practices

Evidence shows that with appropriate training and support, pharmacy and drug-shop staff can facilitate the use of modern contraception, especially in urban slums and rural areas where the unmet need is high, access is poor, and health-worker shortages and other barriers prevent men, women, and youth from accessing family planning services. Learn how this promising practice is being implemented in a variety of settings.

State of the World’s Fathers 2017

MenCare, June 2017

State of the World’s Fathers: Time for Action (SOWF) 2017 draws from nearly 100 research studies and reports, with data from nearly every country where it is available. To reach gender equality in less than the currently estimated 75 years – at work as well as at home – the second-ever State of the World’s Fathers  report reveals what has stalled progress toward equality and lays out a bold agenda for men and boys doing fully 50 percent of the world’s unpaid care work.

The “Shocking” Reality of Child Marriage in the U.S.

IPS, June 8, 2017

While stories of child marriage are commonly associated with the Global South, lesser known are the cases closer to home: in the United States. Across the world, child marriage has persisted and the United States is no exception. Across all 50 states in the North American nation, marriage before the age of 18 has remained legal.
