What Works for Working Women? Understanding Female Labor Force Participation in Urban Bangladesh

Despite making great strides in increasing female labor force participation (FLFP) in the past decade, only 36% of women participate in the Bangladeshi labor force today, and the growth rate of FLFP in urban areas has significantly fallen. Using unique individual-level data on labor market participation, time-use, norms, and skills, this paper explores the factors that constrain women in slums and low-income neighborhoods in Dhaka from engaging in the labor market and supplying their labor to wage earning or self-employment.
