Mid-Cycle Results from Child Marriage and Gender Norms Research

Posted on June 2, 2017

The Technical Advisory Group of IGWG engaged in an exchange of ideas on December 4, 2013 as part of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence. Presenters from the Georgetown Institute for Reproductive Health’s GREAT project, the International Center for Research on Women’s IMPACCT project, and Population Council’s Increasing Age of Marriage project described their mid-cycle results of ongoing research on gender norms and child marriage. While the data are still preliminary, these projects presented findings from formative research, intervention design, implementation, impact results (as available), and plans for scale up.

Briefs on the research projects can be found below.

SASA! and Its Application in Haiti– PLUS a Sneak Peak at the SASA Evaluation Results in Uganda

Posted on June 2, 2017

This fascinating brown bag, held on April 24, featured well-known GBV expert, Dr. Mary Ellsberg, who shared a video on the SASA program and a look at the preliminary results from the monitoring and evaluation of SASA. She noted that the preliminary figures show that it can be worthwhile to engage communities as a whole to encourage social norm change.

Dr. Ellsberg was followed by a presentation by Sara Siebert, Violence Against Women and Girls Program Director of Beyond Borders in Haiti, in which she discussed the adaptation of the SASA program in Haiti, emphasizing the importance of culturally appropriate language and visuals.

Gender Transformative Parenting Skills to Interrupt the Cycle of Violence

Posted on May 28, 2017

The third event in our year-long series was Gender Transformative Parenting Skills To Interrupt the Cycle of Violence and focused on parenting programs as an early approach to preventing GBV throughout the lifecycle, starting during childhood.

Our first panelist, Prof. Mark Tomlinson of Stellenbosch University, South Africa presented two presentations virtually: Parenting Interventions as Prevention, an overview of the field of parenting programs in international development, and Sikhula Ndawonye, an initiative developed with support of the Sexual Violence Research Initiative (SVRI), using the latest evidence to design cutting edge parenting projects and working with mothers of infants in South Africa.

Kim Ashburn of Georgetown University’s Institute for Reproductive Health presented on The Making of REAL Men: Involving Men in Violence Prevention  in Uganda, sharing the project’s approach, evaluation results and lessons learned.
